We know visiting a church for the first time can feel awkward. Our ushers and welcome team are always on hand to answer any questions you may have or to point you in the right direction. Here are the answers to some common questions so that you know what to expect before you come through the doors.
Where can I park?
There is some parking, including plenty of handicapped parking, behind the church. You can also park in the lot on the corner of Capitol Avenue and Oak Street, just one block up from the church. Or you can park in the Armory parking lot directly across the street.
Is the church accessible?
Yes! You can park behind the church and there are signs that direct you to the entrance with the elevator to bring you directly into the worship space. You will also be able to take the elevator down to Luther Hall after worship for coffee and fellowship. We offer several pews that are adapted to allow for wheelchairs as well as chairs for companion seating and/or those using walkers. You are welcome to come forward for communion or we will bring communion to your seat, just let the usher know. On a typical Sunday, we have between 3-5 members who choose to receive at their seat. We also have hearing assistance aids available.
What should I wear?
Come as you are. People wear everything from very casual jeans and t-shirts to suits and ties. It’s wide variety and you’ll fit right in.
Do I have to stand up or introduce myself?
Not to worry! We don’t call on visitors to stand or otherwise introduce themselves to the whole congregation. But please do let our ushers know if you’re visiting and you have any questions. They’re happy to answer any questions you may have.
What is worship like?
We worship using the Evangelical Lutheran Worship book. Everything you need including the prayers, reading, and hymns will be printed in the worship bulletin, which our ushers will hand to you as you enter. We love music! We have a choir and a variety of musicians every Sunday who lead us in song from a wide range of musical styles from traditional to more contemporary. The presider will let the congregation know when to sit or stand and the ushers will guide you forward for communion. All are welcome to receive the bread and wine of communion at the Lord’s Table. Gluten free wafers and white grape juice are available as needed. If, for any reason, you choose not to receive the bread and wine, you are invited to come forward for a blessing. Worship typically lasts between 75 minutes on a typical Sunday to 90 minutes for special events.
Bringing kids?
Jesus said let the little ones come to me and we’re happy you brought your little ones to church. Books and activity packets are available in the Welcome Area located at the back of the church. The Welcome Area is also available for kids who need some room to squirm and fidget and crawl around. Don’t worry if your little one gets fussy – fussy babies are always welcome.
There is also a nursery downstairs in Luther Hall which has speakers to allow you hear worship. Changing tables are available in both the men’s & women’s restrooms.
During the summer months, we offer a Children’s Message in addition to the sermon. If you’re bringing little ones or school age kids with you, they’re invited to come sit on the altar steps after the gospel but if they’re not comfortable, they can listen from their seat. No pressure! During the school year, children from pre-k (age 3) to Grade 5 are welcome to participate in Sunday School. They will be dismissed from worship at the appropriate time. And again, if they choose to remain in worship, they are welcome to do so.
Is there fellowship after worship?
Yes! We offer coffee and fellowship after worship downstairs in Luther Hall. Please join us. It’s a great way to meet folks and ask any questions you might have.
