How Emanuel Serves Hartford and Beyond

Our ministry to and with those beyond our congregation is central to life at EmanuelSocial ministry is on the move at Emanuel Lutheran Church! Our new SPROUT (Saturday Parish Recreational Outreach) program began on September 28, 2013 and is supported by over 90 Emanuel members. Each Saturday about 15 neighborhood youth get a healthy meal, some exercise and play time, and go home with food for the family (including Thanksgiving Dinner), books to borrow, and at Christmas a few extra gifts. The energy and enthusiasm of the members is only exceeded by the enthusiasm of the kids. In addition, we are also active in supporting a number of other longstanding commitments and associations. We support the work of Hands on Hartford by providing community meals to those in need in the MANNA program and also collect food and toiletry donations to support local food banks and shelters. Our Sandberg mission fund is supporting a “backpack” food program at Burns School, Habitat for Humanity in addition to SPROUT and MANNA. We also contribute to the ELCA, Calumet, Foodshare, Lutheran Social Services, and Conference of Churches, Habitat for Humanity, Hands on Hartford and our Friday Night Program through our General Operating budget.

SPROUT outreach

SPROUT (Saturday Parish Recreational Outreach) Program is our new outreach ministry at Emanuel. It is a nutrition and movement program, designed loosely on Michelle Obama’s “Get Up and Move” initiative. Many children in Hartford live below the poverty level. The children receive breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner at school, but on weekends there is often little food in the home. Through SPROUT we seek to provide health breakfast, active games in the gym and a nutritious bagged lunch for first through sixth graders in the area to take home.

We have given out fresh fruit, milk and eggs to the families as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and Christmas gifts of razor scooters.  In addition to food, we have books available for the children to take home from a program called “Read to Grow.”

Over 90 of our members volunteer with the program. Contact us if you are interested in contributing to the program!
