Confirmation

All 6th, 7th and 8th graders are invited to participate in this three-year program held on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Twice a month all three grades gather together to participate in the journey of learning, experiencing and questioning in fun, Scripture-grounded and Lutheran theologically informed instruction. After the presentation portion of the evening students gather by grade level with their small group Mentors to engage in exploration and discussion of where that evening’s faith topic intersects with life. Video, music and other multimedia resources enhance the Here We Stand curriculum and make the material approachable for today’s learner. Parents whose youth would like to participate in Confirmation may visit our dedicated Here We Stand website at http://emanuelhartford.herewestandconfirmation.org.

The learning and spiritual growth from weekly classes are nourished by weekly worship, a Spring Retreat and various serving opportunities, including the annual Servant Event Overnight. At the end of the three year period we celebrate Rite of Affirmation of Baptism, a worship service that offers each student the opportunity to share a faith reflection.

Confirmation students are invited to take leadership roles in the Sunday School’s annual Festival of the Nativity and to participate in Emanuel’s annual Lucia Festival. They also participate in Emanuel’s Lent program each year, which usually includes Wednesday Night Soup Supper, a presentation based on the faith topic for the year and worship.

Along with the Emanuel members who serve as Mentors, there are members who serve as Prayer Friends to our confirmation students. Each student has a secret Prayer Friend who remains with him or her throughout the three years of confirmation instruction. Through prayer, the Prayer Friend has an impact on the life of the student through intercession to God. They pray regularly for their assigned student and send simple correspondence special wishes on birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. Their identity remains a secret for three years until they are revealed just days before Affirmation of Baptism Sunday. If you would like more information on serving as a Mentor or Prayer Friend, contact Natalie Bloomquist.

8th graders are welcome to participate in Youth Group. See the Teen Section below.

All classes, activities and materials will remind students during this difficult stage of adolescence of God’s merciful acceptance through:

  • Reading Bible stories, taking into account entrance into abstract thinking
  • confirmation instruction
  • ministry that helps youth through Word and Sacrament and through response to the good news of the Gospel2013_12_1_Sunday Sermon
